Leonardo DiCaprio’s theatrical hot streak might be getting a little extra Heat.

Di Caprio is at the top of the list to star in Heat 2, which may be in the works at Amazon MGM after Warner Bros. opted to let another company produce the sequel to their 1995 crime thriller starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer. Other names include Adam Driver, Austin Butler and Bradley Cooper.

Warner Bros. and Mann could not agree on the budget for the sequel movie, and Warner Bros. gave the ok to Mann to shop the movie around to another studio, allowing Amazon MGM to decide whether they want to produce Heat 2, and if they can meet Mann’s budgetary needs for the expansive project.

The idea to make a sequel to Heat stems from when director Michael Mann released his crime novel Heat 2 in 2022, which he co-wrote with author Meg Gardiner. The book became a No. 1 New York Times best-seller.

The 1995 original starred Al Pacino as a Los Angeles cop named Vincent Hanna obsessed with tracking down career criminal Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro), just as McCauley plans to pull off one last heist before retiring. The cast also included Val Kilmer, Ashley Judd, Amy Brenneman, Tom Sizemore and Jon Voight.

Acting as both a prequel and a sequel, the story of the novel Heat 2 is set in several timelines. One follows a younger McCauley and his crew enjoying the spoils of their heists. Another tells of what happened to Chris Shiherlis, the thief played by Kilmer in the 1995 movie, and his multiyear quest to reunite with his former girlfriend (who was played by Judd in the original). Another storyline takes place in a lawless South American drug zone. The book also features a new menace: a brutal murderer and rapist named Otis Wardell.

Jerry Bruckheimer, Scott Stuber, and Nick Nesbitt have also now joined Heat 2 as producers. No release date has been set as of now.
