Funkadelic! Eddie Murphy in Talks to Produce And Play George Clinton in Upcoming Biopic
Eddie Murphy will produce and star in another passion project.
Deadline reports that Murphy is in talks now to play Parliament-Funkadelic leader George Clinton, in a film he will produce with John Davis and Catherine Davis. The team are securing the rights from Clinton’s management, after which they will select scriptwriters, and find a studio for the project.
Clinton, also known as the Godfather of Funk, has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Winner. He is thought to be one of the most important musical innovators of his era.
Murphy previously starred in the critically-lauded Dolemite is My Name for Netflix, a “dream project” for the comedy icon, about Blaxploitation film star Rudy Ray Moore. Murphy is said to be very passionate about committing the George Clinton story to film.
The film will purportedly tell the story of Clinton’s origins as well as his legacy, starting with his childhood in 1940s North Carolina, and continuing through the formation of his groundbreaking bands Parliament and Funkadelic in the late 1960s. The movie will also explore Clinton and the bands’ influence on the hip-hop genre and some of its most important artists like Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Outkast and the Wu-Tang Clan.
The most likely outlet for the film could be streaming, as Murphy currently has a three-picture deal with Amazon Studios, through which distributed his long-awaited 2021 sequel Coming 2 America.
Murphy’s next project will be the Kenya Barris-directed Netflix comedy You People, in which he co-stars with Jonah Hill, and following that he’s starring in another sequel to one of his 80s hits: Beverly Hills Cop 4 this summer, as he reprises his Alex Foley role.
