The past is ever-present in The Conjuring universe.

In the trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites, noted demon-hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are investigating a haunting in Pennsylvania when they realize they must return to 1986 – in spirit – in order to vanquish their first demon, the one that got away from them.

We were young, we were scared, we ran away,” Lorraine says. “And after all these years, it wasn’t done with our family.”

Playing the 1986 versions of Ed and Lorraine are Orion Smith and Madison Lawlor. Through them we see the Warren’s encounter with the demon, which now is zeroing in on their daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson). In one scene, Judy, wearing a wedding gown, is in a hall of mirrors when one of her reflections attacks her.

Michael Chaves directs The Conjuring: Last Rites from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg & Richard Naing and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, from a story by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick & James Wan. The film is based on characters created by Chad Hayes & Carey W. Hayes.

James Wan and Peter Safran, who are behind the series and all its spinoffs, are back as producers. The film also stars Ben Hardy, Steve Coulter, Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Beau Gadsdon, John Brotherton and Shannon Kook.

And just in case you thought the filmmakers forgot about Annabelle, that accursed doll that established her own franchise in the Conjuring Character Universe, there’s a brief flash of the doll in silhouette midway through the trailer.

The Conjuring: Last Rights is said to be the last film in the series and will possess theaters beginning on September 5th.
