The team behind Cobra Kai want to bring the “smoke-filled chaos” back to the Harold & Kumar franchise.
Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, the creators responsible for continuing the adventures of Karate Kids Daniel and Johnny on the popular Netflix series, just closed a deal to write and direct a new movie for the franchise, which began with 2004’s Harold & Kumar go to White Castle.
Whether it will feature stars Kal Penn and John Cho is not yet known, though they are expected to return. But as of now, neither Penn nor Cho have officially signed on to the project, and in a joint statement issued Tuesday, Hurwitz and Schlossberg indicated that the stoner torch may be handed off to the youth in the next film.
“We’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all,” Hurwitz and Schlossberg wrote. “It’s high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don’t tell their kids.”
The first film in the series followed the two stoners as they took a road trip to satisfy their craving for White Castle burgers and all the hijinks that ensued. There have already been two sequels to the first Harold & Kumar outing: 2008’s Harold & Kumar Escape Guantanamo Bay and 2011’s A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas.
Neil Patrick Harris, a franchise regular, has not committed to the next film, and no official casting announcements have been made.
Hurwitz and Schlossberg are attached to write several upcoming comedies, such as ‘Til Beth Do Us Part and Grandma vs. Grandma, and are in production on 72 Hours, with Kevin Hart.
No release date for Harold & Kumar 4 is known at this time.
