Horror Boy: ‘Hellboy: The Crooked Man’ Mixes Folklore and the Supernatural in the Character’s New Incarnation
Spooky things are happening somewhere in Appalachia, but this isn’t a job for Mulder and Scully or the Men in Black.
No, the big red guy with sawed-off horns is here to investigate in a new trailer for the upcoming Hellboy: The Crooked Man, with Jack Kesy (12 Strong) playing Hellboy’s third big-screen incarnation. The film will put Hellboy up against a threat of supernatural origin.
Based on the comic-book miniseries of the same name by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and artist Richard Corben, Hellboy: The Crooked Man is set in the 1950s and costars Adeline Rudolph (Resident Evil) as Bobbie Jo Song, a rookie agent of Hellboy’s agency, the BPRD (the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense). Song teams up with Hellboy to protect the residents of Appalachia from the creepy Crooked Man, who is collecting souls for the devil.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man was directed by Crank co-director Brian Taylor and also stars Jefferson White, Leah McNamara, Joseph Marcell, Hannah Margetson and Martin Bassindale as the eerie Crooked Man.
Millennium Media announced the newest entry into the Hellboy screen canon back in February of this year. Responding to rumors that AI had been used to create creature designs, Taylor said that no AI tools were used in pre-production or elsewhere, and that the characters of both Hellboy and the Crooked Man were created and shot practically, with no CGI enhancements.
While some geek news outlets report being underwhelmed at the new trailer and the movie’s apparent low-budget look, the movie will nonetheless be barreling into theaters on September 19th, 2024.
