Shelley Duvall was one bad mother.

Not in real life – the star of The Shining and Popeye, who died this past July at 75 – was beloved by many. But in the trailer for The Forest Hills, her last screen performance, her character doesn’t look like a candidate for Mom of the Year.

The film follows Rico (Chiko Mendez) whose nightmares and dark secrets send him spiraling into madness near his home in the Catskill Mountains. Fueled by fear and isolation, as well as struggling with a strained relationship with Mama (Duvall), Rico attempts to find solace in his friendship with Billy (Edward Furlong), in an attempt to fight his demons. Someone also seems to transform into a werewolf at least once as well.

The trailer features a lot of gore, and Duvall’s character can be seen taking long drags on a cigarette as she recalls mistreating Rico and his sister when they were younger.

In addition to Duvall and Furlong, other horror legends in the cast include Dee Wallace (The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, Cujo) and Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp.) Stacy Nelkin and Marianne Hagan, who each appeared in a different Halloween sequel, also star.

The Forest Hills was written, directed and produced by Scott Goldberg for My Way Productions. Goldberg conceived the film as an alternate take on his short Danielle’s Revenge, released in 2007. The film premiered at Smodcastle Cinemas (Kevin Smith’s theater) in March of 2023 but had been searching for national distribution until recently.

This is Duvall’s first onscreen appearance since 2002’s Manna from Heaven. Duvall told the New York Times that her desire to return to acting coincided with Goldberg’s frequent calls to participate. Goldberg’s crew traveled to where Duvall lived to accommodate her mobility issues.

The Forest Hills will be available in select cinemas beginning on Friday, October 4th. Check the official website for more details.
