Iconic: ‘Philadelphia’, ‘Inception’, ‘Karate Kid’ ‘Clueless’ and More Added to National Film Registry

What do films White Christmas, The Thing, The Big Chill, Glory, Before Sunrise, The Incredibles and The Grand Budapest Hotel all have in common?
Those films and more were among the 2025 class of inductees into the National Film Registry, the Library of Congress announced Thursday. 25 films were selected for the National Film Registry due to their “cultural, historic or aesthetic importance to preserve the nation’s film heritage,” according to the Library of Congress website.
The films selected spanned over 100 years, from silent film The Tramp and the Dog, released in 1896, to The Grand Budapest Hotel, which came out in 2014 and is the most recent inductee. The full list is below.

Movies are chosen from titles submitted by the public on the Library of Congress website. 7,559 different titles were submitted for consideration this year. This year’s class of films brings the total of films preserved to 925.
You can submit your own film nominations throughout the year on the Library’s web site. Nominations for next year’s list of inductees will be accepted until August 15th, 2026. Go to loc.gov/film to cast a vote.
“When we preserve films, we preserve American culture for generations to come. These selections for the National Film Registry show us that films are instrumental in capturing important parts of our nation’s story,” said Acting Librarian of Congress Robert R. Newlen in a statement. “We are proud to continue this important work, adding a broad range of 25 films to the National Film Registry as a collective effort in the film community to protect our cinematic heritage.”

If you’d like to see some of these films, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will host a television special Thursday, March 19th, starting at 8pm (ET). The network will screen a selection of films named to the registry this year with film historian Jacqueline Stewart, chair of the National Film Preservation Board, introducing the films.
