In a Galaxy Far, Far Away: Sigourney Weaver May Jump Franchises to Star With a Different Kind of Alien
Sigourney Weaver is used to a more aggressive type of Alien than Grogu.
But it perhaps won’t be long before she squares off against the cute, huggable, but always hungry creature in the upcoming Star Wars-adjacent film The Mandalorian & Grogu. Weaver is currently in talks to join the cast of the movie, which is a direct extension of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
The Mandalorian launched in November of 2019 as the flagship show for Disney+, and the character then known only as Baby Yoda (his true name was revealed later) became a pop culture phenomenon, featured on memes, merch and more after the show’s launch. Pedro Pascal leads the series as intergalactic bounty hunter, Din Djarin, or to use his professional title, The Mandalorian, who at first wants to bring Grogu in for a bounty, but ends up being his protector.
The show’s third season aired last year, afterwards launching a number of spinoffs, including The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka, which has got a second season pickup and is now in development. No fourth season has been announced, but the show has yet to be officially canceled.
The Mandalorian & Grogu, to be directed by Jon Favreau, will be the first Star Wars-universe film to begin production since 2019. Pascal is expected to return as Djarin, as is the other title character, Grogu. Weaver’s role, if she is cast, is unknown.
Weaver has a number of iconic sci-fi franchises and films on her resume; not only in the Alien movies, but she has also played roles in the Avatar series, in Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, and of course, she co-starred in the dead-on science fiction spoof Galaxy Quest.
The Mandalorian & Grogu has a projected release date of sometime in 2026.
