Did the new trailer for Trap give away the signature Shyamalan twist?

Probably not. Josh Hartnett plays a father who takes his teen daughter Jody (Ariel Donoghue) to see her favorite singer, Lady Raven. While seeking the restroom, Hartnett’s character notices that there are a lot of police officers inside and outside of the arena. Like, A LOT.

Hartnett’s character asks a food vendor (Jonathan Landgon) what’s up, and the vendor tells Hartnett that the concert is actually a police operation intended to capture a serial killer known as ‘The Butcher’, for reasons it shouldn’t be too hard to guess.

The trailer then cuts to Hartnett, alone in a stall, checking an app on his phone. He plays back some surveillance video that shows him that, yes, the man he has tied up and imprisoned is still there, begging for help.

It’s a fairly obvious twist, but is that the only one? Only time – and watching the full movie when it comes out this August – will tell.

In another father-daughter touch, Shyamalan’s daughter Saleka, an R&B singer, plays Lady Raven and performs as her throughout the film. She also wrote some of the songs and helped compose the score.

Trap also stars Hayley Mills, Allison Pill, Marnie McPhail, and Vanessa Smythe. M. Night Shyamalan is producing and directing from a script he wrote, This is Shyamalan’s first film with Warner Bros. after he ended his association with Universal Pictures.

Trap will be in theaters beginning August 9th.
