We see you shiver with antici…pation at the opportunity to celebrate The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The simple story of a sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania was turned into a cult film that has been in theaters since its release 50 years ago. September 26th, 2025 is the 50th anniversary of the release of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and a new documentary chronicles the long-running musical and the play that inspired it.
Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror features extensive interviews with Richard O’Brien, who created Rocky Horror, as well as with stars Susan Sarandon, Tim Curry, and more. It was directed by O’Brien’s son Linus.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the longest-running theatrical cinema release in the world, playing continously since its release. Starring Tim Curry as Frank-N-Furter; Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon as Brad and Janet; Meatloaf as Eddie, Little Nell as Columbia; Patricia Quinn as Magenta, and O’Brien as Riff Raff; the film is a science fiction/horror/musical/comedy that has become a cult classic with midnight movie-goers, who participate in audience participation rituals like dressing as the characters, talking back to the cast, singing and dancing at the front of the theater during musical numbers, and throwing cards, rice and toast (when allowed) at prescribed moments in the movie.
The film is based on a play called The Rocky Horror Show, which was written by O’Brien and directed by Jim Sharman, who directed the film. The play debuted in London in 1973 and will be revived on Broadway beginning in the spring of 2026.
The success of the play led to a theatrical deal with 20th Century Fox to produce a film, which was not a commercial or critical success in its initial run, but which became a staple of midnight movie screenings from the 1970s on. When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, Rocky Horror Picture Show was not confined to the Disney vault like other of its titles but allowed to continue playing at the late-night showings.
The film debuted earlier this year at South by Southwest festival and will play in a limited 50-theater run beginning on its anniversary. To find the Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror screening nearest you, go to its official website: www.rockyhorrordoc.com. And a national tour with Bostwick and other cast members will tour beginning later this month
If you would like to do the Time Warp at home, Disney has restored and remastered the film in 4K Ultra HD. Don’t forget the stock up on cards, rice and toast.
