You haven’t seen the Guardians of the Galaxy crew in action since 2017, but that’s about to change, which is a very good thing, according to James Gunn.

Gunn, the writer/director of the first two volumes of the franchise, is currently shooting a GotG holiday special for streaming, and he isn’t exactly underselling it.

“The Holiday Special is the greatest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Gunn told RadioTimes.com.

“It’s totally ridiculous, and every day we can’t believe that we’re making it. We all completely love it. It is unlike anything that anyone’s ever seen before. I can’t wait for people to see it.

“And it’s out pretty soon,” he added. “You know, it’s out this Christmas. It’s not like people have to wait that long,” Gunn said about the special, which will be “TV special length, not feature film length.” The special will air on Disney+ this December.

Gunn also tweeted his endorsement of his project, saying that though he is prone to hyperbole, and “usually think[s] the current thing I’m working on is the best thing I’ve ever done. That said I really do love it & think people are going to be very happy this Christmas with what we’re creating.”

Another tweet noted that “more than one great new MCU characters will be introduced,” so feel free to speculate on who might make their MCU debut soon. The special will take place some time after the events that took place in GotG Vol. 2.

The Guardians will also be making a cameo in Chris Hemsworth’s fourth outing as Marvel’s resident god, Thor: Love and Thunder, which is due in theaters on July 8th. Volume 3 of Guardians of the Galaxy is also shooting now, and is to be released in May of 2023. Gunn will also write and direct a second season of his runaway DC hit series, Peacemaker.
