‘Kinds of Kindness’ Reunites Director Lanthimos and Emma Stone Months After ‘Poor Things’ Release
A mere six months after the release of the Academy Award-winning Poor Things, director Yorgos Lanthimos’ next feature film will be available in theaters.
Though it’s not a sequel to Poor Things, Kinds of Kindess features three of that movie’s stars: Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Margaret Qualley, though whether they will act together is not known as this is an anthology film comprised of three separate segments.
According to the film’s official description, Kinds of Kindness is “a triptych fable with segments following a man without choice who tries to take control of his life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing at sea has returned and seems to be a different person; and a woman who is determined to find a specific someone destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.
This is Stone’s third film with Lanthimos; in addition to Poor Things, she also starred in The Favourite, another of Lanthimos’s films that scored well with The Academy. Kinds of Kindness also stars Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schafer.
The original screenplay was written by Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou, who have collaborated on three other films: The Lobster, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, and Dogtooth. The movie was produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Kasia Malipan, and Yorgos Lanthimos for Searchlight Pictures.
Lanthimos spoke at the British Film Institute recently
, and said of the film, “It’s three different stories, and we’re finishing the edit right now, and I still can’t tell you exactly what it is about.” He continued, “But I also wouldn’t want to tell you what I thought the stories are about because it just makes it so small. I try not to even think about it during the process because I’m afraid that it will make my choices more narrow.”
Kinds of Kindness will premiere in theaters on June 21st.
