Look Who’s Talking Again: A24 Has Already Greenlit Sequel To Their Chilling Summer Smash ‘Talk to Me’
Get ready for another round of talks.
A24 has greenlit a sequel for its still-in-theaters hit Talk to Me, tentatively titled Talk 2 Me. Australian YouTube stars Danny and Michael Philippou, who directed the terrifying thriller as their feature debut, are behind the follow-up film. Danny Philippou is writing the screenplay with Bill Hinzman.
Plot details have not been revealed. but the Phillpou brothers told The Hollywood Reporter they have already shot a prequel in hope of releasing it after their first film. “We actually shot an entire [..*..] prequel already. It’s told entirely through the perspective of mobile phones and social media, so maybe down the line we can release that,” Danny Philippou said. “But also while writing the first film, you can’t help but write scenes for a second film. So there’s so many scenes. The mythology was so thick, and if A24 gave us the opportunity, we wouldn’t be able to resist. I feel like we’d jump at it.”
(*The character featured in the prequel was redacted for those who don’t appreciate spoilers.)
Talk to Me starred Sophia Wilde as Mia, a teen who participates in a seance on the anniversary of her mother’s death. As the boundaries between this world and the afterlife collapses, Mia is haunted by supernatural – and deadly – visions. Miranda Otto, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji and Zoe Terakes also starred.
A24 acquired the Australian horror film for a high-seven figure investment that seems to have paid off for them. Since its July 28th US release, the film has grossed $22M here, making it one of the studio’s highest grossing horror pics of all-time.
Currently, Talk to Me is besting the running totals of Ari Aster’s Midsommar ($17.3M), has already blown past last summer’s Bodies Bodies Bodies final domestic take ($11.4M), and will soon pass the stateside gross of The Witch ($25.4M). It’s only 22% behind the total of A24’s highest grossing horror film of all-time, Hereditary, which scored $44M domestically.
Talk 2 Me joins A24’s horror franchise family alongside Ti West’s X trilogy, which concludes with the upcoming film MaXXXine, starring Mia Goth, Halsey, Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, and Michelle Monaghan. Talk to Me was produced by Causeway Films’ Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton.
