45 years after The Collapse, Furiosa made her mark.

Anya Taylor-Joy plays the younger version of Charlize Theron’s character in the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Furiosa: a Mad Max Saga.” The trailer, released Thursday evening at CCXP, Brazil’s biggest Comic-Con event, is heavy on action and light on dialogue – not surprising considering the bulk of the movie features a high-speed race across the desert.

This film is a prequel, showing the origin story of Imperator Furiosa from the 2015 film, where the title character is taken away from the Green Place of Many Mothers only to be immersed in a gritty battle for survival among the Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Furiosa must fight her way back to her home through the Wasteland as the two Tyrants fight each other for control of the Citadel.

Fury Road was a smash hit with audiences and critics alike when it was released in 2015, making nearly $400 million at the box office globally. The film starred Tom Hardy as Mad Max, taking over the role from Mel Gibson who played the character in the original film and two sequels. Despite the prequel’s title, the character of Max is not expected to appear in this film.

Fury Road‘s Furiosa was a one-armed survivor, who also had to flee an evil warlord. The result was widely praised as one of the best action films ever made, with high marks given to the use of practical effects, as the film was shot on location in the African desert rather than on green screens. The trailer looks heavy on CGI, though director George Miller did abandon his plans to cast Theron in the lead and use CGI de-aging effects to allow her to play younger. Taylor-Joy was cast in the role in 2021.

Furiosa also stars Chris Hemsworth, whose character Demetus faces off against a younger Immortan Joe, as well as Tom Burke, Nathan Jones, Angus Sampson and Quaden Bayles. The prequel, co-written by Miller and screenwriter Nick Lathouris, captures the origins of Gas Town and the Bullet Farm in the franchise.
