McAvoy Teams Up With Blumhouse Again (This Time Without M. Night Shyamalan) For Thriller Remake
James McAvoy is back in the Blumhouse.
The star of Unbreakable and Split is returning to the horror genre in an English-language remake of the 2022 movie Speak No Evil, the tale of two families (one Danish, one Dutch) who meet on vacation and plan a weekend reunion. which soon turns in to a less than pleasant experience for one of the families.
McAvoy most recently starred in the third and final season of the BBC/HBO TV Series His Dark Materials reprising his role as Lord Asriel alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ruth Wilson.
The movie will be based on the original screenplay, written by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup. James Watkins (The Woman in Black) will direct the film, which is scheduled to be out on August 9th, 2024. Blumhouse and Universal Pictures are partnering on this production.
There’s no word yet on which character McAvoy will be playing, but given his history of playing heroes, villains, and characters that combine elements of the two, he could easily play either male lead – the good guy or the bad guy.
While Speak No Evil is a traditional horror film, the movie plays on the way people allow their social and physical boundaries to be trampled, all in the name of politeness, only to find too late that they are in horrible danger. Director and co-writer Christian Tafdrup said in an interview that “We wanted to make not just a disturbing film, but the most disturbing film in Denmark’s film history ever.”
