During the DC panels at today’s San Diego Comic Con the comic giant’s upcoming live-action films like Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, got a lot of attention, but there are a quartet of animated features that will also be worthy of an audience.

Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham, is seemingly going to be based on the comic run of the same name, much like The Long Halloween parts 1 and 2 were. In this story created by Mike Mignola, Batman is a pulp hero set in the 1920s, who battles H.P. Lovecraft-inspired monsters. Hopefully this movie utilizes the visual style of the comic it’s based off of well, which is something DC has done recently so there is a good precedent.

Justice League: Warworld, is pretty vague as a story concept as the War World is more of a setting than a singular story, so there’s a lot they can do with it. The War World in question has a few different origins, but the two most popular are one where it is a mobile planetoid whose entire surface is covered in weapons, or one where it is a normal planet full of gladiatorial combatants training to assemble an army. Both versions are ruled by the alien tyrant Mongul, a fearsome foe whose strength rivals even that of Superman. This movie has the most potential to be set in the current DC animated universe, alongside recent films like The Long Halloween parts 1 and 2 and Justice Society: WWII

Legion of Super-Heroes is going to be a film focusing on the superhero team of the same name; a largely underused group compared to the Justice League and other DC teams. The Legion of Super-heroes, like many comic stories and characters, has a lot of different versions, but here is a general synopsis. They are a team of heroes from the 31st century, inspired by the heroic acts and legend of a long-since gone Superboy, they gather together to fight evil just as he did, which often leads them to time traveling back to the era of their hero. The team has many members but most commonly use characters like Brainiac 5, a member of the same race as the Superman villain Brainac, but here he’s a hero. Saturn Girl, a hero with mental abilities like telepathy and Phantom Girl an alien from the planet Bgztl, who possesses the ability to phase through matter and even dimensions might also be featured. With lots of stories and characters to choose from this film has a lot of potential to be a great fresh start for a less popular DC hero team.

RWBY x Justice League seems to be based on the short comic run of the same name, in which the Justice League enters the world of RWBY, a popular internet animated series created by Rooster Teeth. It follows a group of young girls named Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang as they learn how to use magical powers and weapons to hunt monsters. The members of the Justice League have their designs, power and equipment represented in the style of RWBY for this adventure.

That’s all for DC’s upcoming animated projects, but be sure to check out the ones releasing this year, including Green Lantern: Beware My Power which drops this week. DC is sure to release more details about the new films’ plot, voice cast, art style and more as we approach 2023.
