Moving On: Taika Waititi Reveals His ‘Star Wars’ Film Isn’t Happening but He’s Got Plenty of Movies to Make

Star Wars is officially on ice.
No, you won’t be able to take your kids to see Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Yoda and Darth Vader skating rings around each other at your local coliseum. There’s nothing to see at all. What’s been iced is the untitled Star Wars project that director Taika Waititi was scheduled to direct.
While promoting a movie he did get to make, Klara and the Sun, Waititi told a reporter from Inverse the bad news: that the project he had been developing since 2020 was not happening.
“I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice and we’re working on a different thing together,” Waititi told the reporter, before his publicist stopped him from going into detail. “Well, there’s your answer. I don’t even know how to dress it up or make it even vague. It’s very iced. I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do,” he continued.
The other person besides Waititi making up the “we” in that statement is screenwriter Tony McNamara, who penned Poor Things and The Favourite for director Yorgos Lanthimos, and who would have written Waititi’s take on Star Wars.
Waititi told Variety in January of this year that he was still working on the film, saying he was “trying to go back and harness a little bit more of the fun from the original films, which is what I remember [from] them. The stakes are very high, and there’s serious things going on, but there’s also a lot of fun to be had in those films. That’s what I was trying to bring back.”
That same month, former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy suggested that the movie still had a future, praising the screenplay Waititi had submitted, while he’d also explained what he was trying to achieve.
Waititi did offer Star Wars fans A New Hope that one day he might be making films set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
“Ice ages do come to an end… Who knows?” Waititi said.
