Netflix Gives ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Sequel A Familiar Name And Some New Faces Join Star Eddie Murphy
The fourth Beverly Hills Cop film won’t bear the number in its title.
Netflix, which has taken over the franchise from Paramount Pictures, is calling its upcoming sequel to the Eddie Murphy franchise Bevery Hills Cop: Axel Foley.
The streamer announced the title Monday, along with some casting news: Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will star with Murphy. Production on the film is underway, with Mark Molloy lensing the script by Will Beall. Murphy is producing the movie, along with Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman.
The franchise moved from Paramount to Netflix in the winter of 2019 and follows the adventures of Detroit cop Foley, who first appeared in the 1984 smash hit that followed him to Beverly Hills to solve the murder of a friend. The film became one of the year’s biggest hits and solidified Murphy’s movie-star status. It was followed by two sequels, in 1987 and 1994.
Gordon-Levitt has recently appeared in Project Power and the Oscar-nominated Trial of the Chicago 7, and will voice Jiminy Cricket in the upcoming Disney’s Pinocchio. Paige was a break-out star after her role in A24’s Zola, and appeared in Sharp Stick, which premiered at Sundance and will star with Peter Dinklage in The Toxic Avenger reboot.
