New ‘Chip ‘n Dale’ Movie Trailer Turns the Weirdness Up to Eleven With A Seedy, Grown-Up Peter Pan
Could this be the first ” adult” animated Disney series?
A new trailer for the upcoming Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers movie is full of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it oddities, but one thing you won’t be able to avoid seeing is the villain of the story, Peter Pan, here a bloated, dead-eyed criminal who somehow managed to grow up after all.
In the movie, which will premiere on Disney+ on May 20th, Chip (John Mulaney) and Dale (Andy Samberg) have become estranged after Rescue Rangers was canceled, and while Dale lives off the glory days and makes appearances at fan conventions, Chip is now an insurance agent. The two are brought back together when they are offered a chance to help a detective (JK Simmons) solve the mystery of who is stealing beloved cartoon characters.
Will Arnett voices Pan, who is some kind of high-tech crimelord that is running a cartoon abduction ring (we see someone fish-napping Flounder from The Little Mermaid!) and possibly selling off parts of the purloined characters. How else to explain the wall of bagged snouts, tails and ears that the erstwhile chipmunk detectives discover?
The trailer also references the other Chip and Dales in pop culture, the Chippendales, a troupe of half-clothed male dancers not usually found in movies aimed at children.
A previous trailer showed that Dale is now in 3D, having had “the surgery”, while Chip remains two-dimensional. And we thought that was weird.
Rounding out the multi-dimensional cast are Seth Rogen, Eric Bana, Flula Borg, Keegan-Michael Key, Tress MacNeille, Tim Robinson, and Chris Parnell. The movie is directed by Samberg’s Lonely Island bandmate Akiva Schaffer from a script written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, and sure to be fun for the whole family.
