New On The Case: ‘Detective Pikachu 2’ May Have Found Its Director In Jonathan Krisel
Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment may have caught a Detective Pikachu director in Portlandia.
The first live-action outing featuring the Pokemon crew made Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Entertainment, and The Pokémon Company enough at the box office to warrant a sequel, though there hasn’t been much news on that front, until now.
Deadline reported Friday that Jonathan Krisel, who co-created IFC’s quirky sketch comedy Portlandia, is in negotiations with the studios to direct the Pokémon Detective Pikachu sequel. The live-action movie, like its predecessor, is based on the globally popular Pokémon franchise. Chris Galletta will write the script for the follow-up to the 2019 box office hit.
In addition to Portlandia, Krisel is credited as co-creating, directing and writing Baskets starring Zach Galifianakis for FX.
The first pocket monster film was directed by Rob Letterman and starred Ryan Reynolds, Ken Watanabe, Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton. It was released by Warner Bros in May of 2019, and grossed more than $430 million at the worldwide box office.
In the original, Reynolds voiced a talking, coffee-loving Pikachu who fancied himself a master detective. His first case finds him teaming up with Tim Goodman, a Pokémon trainer played by Smith, to find Tim’s missing dad.
Even though there are no deals in place as of right now, insiders believe Reynolds will have some part to play in the upcoming sequel.
Pokemon has been a global sensation for more than 25 years, selling more than 440 million video games worldwide, hawking tens of billions of Pokémon TCG cards, creating a mobile game that boasts over 70 million active users worldwide, and broadcasting an animated series in 177 countries that ran for 25 seasons. It is one of the world’s most successful entertainment properties.
