Like a rat trapped in an endless maze, or like anyone stuck in today’s capitalist hellscape, The Lost Man in Exit 8 is seeking a way out.

Based on the video game by Kotake Create, Exit 8 is the story of a man (Kazunari Ninomiya) “trapped in an endless sterile subway passageway sets out to find Exit 8. But even a single oversight will send him back to the beginning. Will he ever reach his goal and escape this infinite corridor?”

The character is only known as The Lost Man, and in the trailer we see him walking down the same corridor, passing the same few characters over and over again, each of whom ignore his pleas for help in finding a way out. That is, until they stop ignoring him, which ups the terror quotient immensely.

As he wanders around, he finds a list of rules on a poster, telling him he must look for anomalies, and instructing him what to do if he finds them, or if he doesn’t. There’s even a poster of MC Escher’s ants on a Mobius Strip to really bring home the endlessness of the Lost Man’s task.

Yamato Kochi, Naru Asanuma, Kotone Hanase, and Nana Komatsu also appear star in Exit 8, which is co-written by Genki Kawamura, who directed, and Kentaro Hirase. It is being distributed by Toho.

Exit 8 opened in Japan last August to great critical and box office success and has already been released in various European and Asian markets. It had its world premiere in the midnight section of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival then went on to play the festival circuit in several countries.

US audiences can get caught in Exit 8 when Neon releases it here on April 10th, 2026.
