If you’re lucky, you’ll run out of oxygen before the sharks get you in The Last Breath.

The film, which stars the late Julian Sands in his last film credit, centers on a group of friends who go treasure hunting in a downed submarine, only to be trapped there by the water’s most deadly predator (in the movies, anyway) – the shark. From there, it’s a matter of time before they get eaten or their oxygen tanks are depleted.

Sands went missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy back in January of 2023, and though an extensive search and rescue mission was mounted, there was no sign of him until his remains were found the following June.

The film, released by RLJE Films, released a trailer and the following synopsis. “Finding the long-lost wreck of the warship USS Charlotte has been the lifelong pursuit of Levi (Sands), an aging expat (and) recent college dropout Noah (Jack Parr). When the USS Charlotte emerges for the first time in eighty years after a tropical storm, Noah’s friends…do a once-in-a-lifetime dive on the newly discovered wreck before it’s handed over to the authorities. The dream dive rapidly turns into a nightmare as they become trapped in the darkness of the Charlotte’s interior, thirty meters down and with a dwindling air supply. And then they discover that they are not alone.”

Joachim Hedén (Breaking Surface) directed the film from a script by Nick Saltrese and story by Andrew Prendergast. Kim Spearman, Alexander Arnold, Erin Mullen and Arlo Carter also star.

The Last Breath dives into theaters on July 26th, and will also be available via VOD.
