James Wan may be getting his hands on the Saw franchise again.

Blumhouse is once again working on a deal to take over partial ownership of the Saw franchise from Twisted Pictures, which co-owns the rights with Lionsgate, who has distributed the films since the first film was released in 2004.

Wan, who directed the first Saw and along with Leigh Whannell wrote the script, is part of the Blumhouse family. In early 2024, his Atomic Monster production company merged with Jason Blumhouse’s studio. Wan has served as Executive Producer on all Saw movies since the first one.

Saw and its sequels tells the continuing story of serial killer John “Jigsaw” Kramer and his acolytes. Instead of straight-forwardly killing his victims, he traps them in torture devices then forces them to essentially maim or kill themselves to escape.

The negotiations have been off and on: after talks began last year, they broke down over issues including the price of the sale.

Saw earned back its $1.2 million production costs by over a hundredfold, and spawned a movie series that has released ten movies so far, as well as video games, theme park attractions and other merchandising.

There has yet to be a sequel to 2023’s Saw X, though one has been in the works but won’t see its projected release date of September 2025 due to disagreements between Lionsgate and the movie’s producers.
