Pack Your Bags: The “Flossy Posse” Is Taking Another ‘Girls Trip’, Says Screenwriter Tracy Oliver
Grab your passports; the Girls Trip is going overseas (allegedly).
Screenwriter Tracy Oliver, who penned the original road trip picture released in 2017, confirmed to
Variety that the entire cast will reunite for a sequel, which will be set overseas.
Oliver, who was at the Sundance Film Festival to promote the second season of her Prime Video series Harlem, said that she had a “definitive Girls Trip 2 update. That it’s officially happening. I can say that.”
She also provided a plot update, and while the film’s producer Will Packer “might kill me, we’re looking to set it in Ghana.”
One of the actors on Harlem, Shoniqua Shandai, screamed “Afrochella!” after Oliver dropped the news. She was referencing the annual Afrochella festival, which is Ghana’s premiere cultural and music event, a la the American music festival Coachella.
Oliver confirmed that the ladies of Girls Trip will hit the road (and cross the ocean) to attend the festival, which attracts prominent musical acts from the region.
Starring Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, and Tiffany Haddish, Girls Trip was directed by Malcolm D. Lee and grossed $140 million, which was an impressive return on a budget of $16 million. In that film, the foursome took a mayhem-filled trip to the Essence Festival in New Orleans.
No timeline has been set for the movie yet, as Oliver has yet to submit her script.
