Sir Ian McKellen couldn’t resist teasing that he’s going to be in the next Lord of the Rings project – or at least, Gandalf’s involvement in it.

At a fan event held in London this past weekend, where McKellen was joined by his LOTR Hobbit squad (Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, and Dominic Monaghan), the venerable actor told the audience that Gandalf and Frodo will feature in the Andy Serkis-directed The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (the film’s working title), the first of two films set in the Tolkein universe that are slated for a December 17th, 2027, theatrical release.

“I hear there’s going to be another movie set in Middle-earth, and it’s going to start filming in May. It’s going to be directed by Gollum, and it’s all about Gollum,” he told the crowd at the For The Love Of Fantasy event.

He added a little more information: “I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting: There’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s a character in the movie called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed.”

McKellen didn’t go as far as to confirm that he and Wood would be on-screen for the film, which will be produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh with Philippa Boyens. Walsh and Boyens are writing the screenplay, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.

The is the first time any Lord of the Rings characters will appear on the big screen since 2003’s The Return of the King. Amazon Prime made a series, The Rings of Power, and the animated War of the Rohirrim for streaming.

New Line and Warner Bros. have not confirmed any casting details.
