Wonder Woman 1984, already rescheduled multiple times from its initial release date set last December, then moved to this summer, again to October and finally to Christmas is now rumored to skip theaters altogether head directly to streaming.

A WB insider has revealed to the Giant Freakin Robot website that studio honchos have surveyed the lay of the land, so to speak, and are pulling WW84 from theaters to spare it from landing with a thud in the same manner that Tenet did when it hit theaters in late summer.

WW84 wasn’t on Warner Bros. latest list of rescheduled movie premieres, a list that included virtually every other pending unreleased 2020 blockbuster. Whether that’s because it’s heading to theaters or not is still unknown. One source, even a previously reliable one, is not a guarantee.

Still, it’s a lot more than likely. Disney went the direct-to-streaming route with the live-action Mulan, and it seems to have paid off. The most devastating thing is that given the precarious finances of theater chains in this country, Warner Bros. may have no choice but to stream.

Virtually every theater chain in the country is on the brink of folding, if they haven’t already. Regal Theaters shuttered all locations and AMC claims they have six months until they do the same, unless something drastic happens.

Studios delaying their releases into the not-too-distant future only works if those theater chains are still in existence at that time. And with no way of knowing when the general public will be able to safely attend movies again, streaming may be the only way for studios to make a living.
