Say My Name: In ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’, Lydia Must Ask Her Least Favorite Ghost to Help Her Find Her Daughter
Lydia and Beetlejuice form the most unlikely team in the trailer for the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
After a family tragedy brings the three generations of Deetz women back to Winter River, it isn’t long before the “ghost with the most” is back to his troublemaking ways. When Lydia’s daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) disappears courtesy of the mysterious portal to the afterlife in the attic of the family home, Lydia (Winona Ryder) must turn to her would-be suitor Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) to lead her through the unseemlier parts of the Netherworld.
“I need you to help me save my daughter but how do I know that you’re gonna keep your word?,” Lydia asks Beetlejuice. “I swear on my dead mother’s soul,” he responds solemnly, before catching on fire.
But of course, Beetlejuice can’t be trusted, and especially not around high school girls – rather than try to marry Lydia again, he has his sights set on Astrid. Yuck.
The rest of the trailer gives glimpses at both new and callback moments, including a tease of a dance sequence between Astrid and Delia Deetz (Catherine O’Hara). We also see more of the new characters played by Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux and Arthur Conti.
We also see a mysterious character with more than a slight resemblance to Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. This mysterious woman/entity, played by Monica Belluci, is hunting Beetlejuice for reasons unknown.
Tim Burton has returned to direct the sequel to his 1988 hit, which had a $75M worldwide gross, and also produces. Wednesday‘s Alfred Gough and Miles Millar wrote the script from their story, which was conceived with Seth Grahame-Smith, based on the characters created by Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson.
The ‘Juice is loose only in a theater near you on September 6th.
