Scarlett Johansson has finally nabbed a role in a legit horror film.
Mike Flanagan has cast the Black Widow star in his upcoming reboot of The Exorcist for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures. Flanagan, who created horror series for Netflix (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass) and theatricals like Dr. Sleep and The Life of Chuck, is starting from scratch for his feature film that he says will be a “radical new take” on the iconic tale of the demonic possession of a little girl.
This is a big get for the project; The Exorcist: Believer underperformed at the box office, bringing in only $136 million worldwide. Johansson has been nominated for an Academy Award twice, and is coming off another hit movie, Jurassic World: Rebirth, which did well enough to have the studio talking about a sequel that may well star Johannson.
“Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film,” said Flanagan in a statement.
No plot or character details have been released yet, but the film will tell an all-new story set in the Exorcist world and will not be a sequel to The Exorcist: Believer. It will be produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek Entertainment and Flanagan, who also will write and direct the film. Shooting is expected to take place in New York City, probably this year as the film had a tentative release date in 2026.
The original Exorcist, released in 1973, was based on the novel by William Peter Blatty and directed by William Friedkin. Linda Blair starred as the demon-challenged young girl and Ellen Burstyn played her mother, who along with Catholic priests tried to save the little girl. The film was a hit and was nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture. None of the prequels, sequels or reboots that followed have done as well critically or financially.
NBC Universal, Peacock and Blumhouse bought the rights from to the Exorcist IP from Morgan Creek, which released Believer, for $400 million dollars back in July of 2021. David Gordon Green had been expected to return to helm the next film in the franchise, but he stepped away from the project.
