Destin Daniel Cretton is set to lead the Avengers into battle against Kang.

The Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director has been picked to lens the Marvel Phase 6 adventure Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Cretton has an overall deal with Marvel that will allow him to direct a Shang Chi sequel as well as a new live action series featuring Wonder Man.

Marvel previously tapped Josh Whedon and Joe and Anthony Russo to direct the Avengers movies, which are the most prestigious films in its lineup. Shang Chi was a critical and box office success, grossing $432 million worldwide.

No writer has been named for the movie, and there’s no way to know yet who is on the Avengers team for the movie, which is due out in May of 2025. The villain will be Kang, one version of whom was last seen played by Jonathan Majors in the Loki season one finale.

Marvel will wrap up Phase 4 with this November’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and has been slowly hiring directors for the movies announced at San Diego Comic Con as part of its MCU Phase 5 and Phase 6.

Also announced: Bassam Tariq is directing Blade, scheduled for a November 3rd, 2023 release; Julius Onah is directing Captain America: New World Order, which will star Anthony Mackie as Captain America and opens May 3rd, 2024; and Jake Schreier will lens Thunderbolts, which will close out Phase 5 with a release date of July 26th, 2024.
