Not for the first time, it’s preferable to be single on Valentine’s Day this year.

That is, it’s better for the characters in the new movie Heart Eyes to be alone as a significant other proves to be a significant liability when there’s a serial killer hunting couples for sport on (allegedly) the most romantic of holidays.

The movie’s official synopsis reads, “when the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.”

The trailer, set to the deceptively lovely “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” shows the serial killer at work, plunging knives into eye sockets, throats, and other sensitive places as he rampages through the town making mincemeat of lovers. The killer is dubbed “Heart Eyes” due to the custom mask he wears as his murder uniform: a leather number with a zipper for a mouth and heart-shaped eyes that light up red. (Imagine The Emoji Movie on a killing spree. 😍)

Killing is easier (and more fun) when you have the right fit.

Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within) directed Heart Eyes from a script by Freaky scribes Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy along with Phillip Murphy. Landon also wrote Happy Death Day. The film comes from Spyglass and Screen Gems and is released by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Heart Eyes stars Olivia Holt, Mason Gooding, Michaela Watkins, Ben Black, and Gigi Zumbado with Devon Sawa and Jordana Brewster. It was produced by Landon, Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks.

Just in time for V-Day, singles (and couples, if they dare) can make a date to see Heart Eyes in theaters beginning on February 7th.
