Songbird or Snake? Peter Dinklage Cast As Dean Highbottom In ‘Hunger Games’ Prequel
Peter Dinklage is changing fictonal addresses.
The actor, formerly Westeros royalty on HBO’s Game of Thrones will relocate to Panem after being cast in the Hunger Games prequel film The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
Dinklage will star opposite actor Tom Blyth, who plays young Coriolanus Snow. The movie also stars Rachel Zegler as tribute Lucy Gray Baird, and Hunter Schafer as Tigris Snow, and Jason Schwartzman.
The Lionsgate movie is based on the 2020 book of the same name, written by Suzanne Collins, which is set decades before the three-book/four-film story of Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, in The Hunger Games. The prequel story follows an 18-year-old Snow — who eventually becomes the tyrannical leader of the dystopian states of Panem — who is chosen to be mentor during the 10th Hunger Games, a televised event in which teenagers are chosen via lottery to fight to the death. Snow was played by Donald Sutherland in the Hunger Games movies.
Highbottom (Dinklage) is the dean of the Academy where Snow is a student. In the book, Casca unintentionally (and drunkenly) dreams up the premise of the Hunger Games during his university days with Coriolanus’ father, Crassus Snow.
Francis Lawrence, who lensed three movies in the franchise (Catching Fire and both parts of the series finale Mockingjay) will direct this one.
“Dean Highbottom is one of the most powerful people in Snow’s life,” Lawrence said. “As the austere and vindictive face of the games, he sets the rules that will determine every aspect of Coriolanus’ fate. I’m thrilled that Peter will be bringing him to life.”
Dinklage’s recent screen credits include I Care a Lot, Cyrano, and American Dreamer. His other upcoming projects include the updated Toxic Avenger movie, along with She Came to Me, Brothers, Hitpig, and The Thicket.
“With production underway, we couldn’t be more excited about the way this cast has come together and thrilled to be welcoming Peter Dinklage to Panem,” Nathan Kahane, president of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, said in a statement. “Peter is not just a fan favorite actor who brings a commanding presence to every part he plays. He is one of the best actors alive. He will bring a formidable, charismatic authority to the important role of the dean of the Academy.”
“I cannot think of an actor more perfectly suited to inhabit the role of Highbottom,” said franchise producer Nina Jacobson, who is returning for the prequel. “As the man credited with conceiving the Hunger Games and the Dean of the Academy, Casca Highbottom is a character with secrets. Peter’s magnetism, intensity and dark humor will infuse him with the intelligence, depth and pathos that the role demands.”
The movie is due in theaters worldwide on November 17th, 2023.
