Spider-Punks never die – in fact, they get their own franchise films.

They do when Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya is involved, anyway. The star of Judas and the Black Messiah and Get Out is said to be co-writing an animated feature film featuring his character Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The movie is in the early stages of development, with nothing confirmed officially and plot details firmly under wraps. But the word is that Kaluuya, who is penning the script with Ajon Singh, will be reprising his role as the anarchic Earth-138 version of Spider-Man from the second Miles Morales feature. Spider-Punk will also be featured in the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Created by writer Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel, Spider-Punk (aka Hobie Brown) is a version of Spider-Man who leans into a more anti-establishment attitude than Peter Parker’s version. This version is fueled by his desire to battle corruption, and first appeared during a Spider-Verse crossover event, as part of 2015’s The Amazing Spider-Man #10.

The first two films in the Spider-Verse franchise were critical and box office successes. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was released in 2018 and grossed over $394 million worldwide. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature for that year. Across the Spider-Verse, which came out in 2023, was also Oscar-nominated and even more successful at the box office, grossing over $690 million worldwide. Beyond the Spider-Verse, the last film in the trilogy, is dated for release on June 25th, 2027.

Sony already expanded its live-action Spider-Man universe with the series Spider-Noir, starring Nicolas Cage and slated to air on MGM+ beginning next year.
