‘Spider-Verse’ Producers Lord and Miller Head to Riverdale for New Live Action ‘Archie’ Comics Movie

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the producers behind animated films like Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, and the Spider-Verse films, are about to make a live-action movie featuring some famous comic book characters – the Archie comics gang.
The news hit the Hollywood press on Wednesday, even though not much is known about the upcoming project (though the odds are good that it won’t be tied into the CW’s long-running and utterly bizarre drama series about the Archies, Riverdale.)
What is known is that Tom King, author of comics such as Marvel’s The Vision, DC’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and various Batman and other DC projects, is penning the screenplay, and Emma Watts and Jon Goldwater are producing for Universal Pictures.
Lord and Miller issued a statement to go with the announcement about why they decided to work on an Archies movie.
“We are longtime fans of Archie, Veronica, Betty, and the gang in all of their iterations,” the duo said in a statement. “When we heard Tom King’s take on the classic material, we instantly thought it made sense as an event movie for all audiences — both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. We’re so excited to bring these beloved characters to the big screen.”
Archie comics were first published in 1939 and has been published pretty consistently since then. It spun off characters like Josie and the Pussycats and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, spawned numerous animated series, a 1990 TV special called Archie: to Riverdale and Back Again, and of course, the CW series Riverdale. There was also a live-action Josie and the Pussycats movie released in 2001, and two live-action series focusing on the Sabrina character.
