The MCU has found its Adam.

Deadline reported Monday that James Gunn has cast the character of Adam Warlock, teased at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2.

Will Poulter (Midsommar, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch) has landed the role of Warlock in Marvel’s anticipated sequelGunn is returning to direct, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will serve as producing.

This being a Marvel film, details about the plot (and how the character will be introduced) are being kept quiet. Production is expected to start in November and will be released on May 5th, 2023.

In Guardians Volume 2, the main villain was Ego, played by Kurt Russell, and the plot involved the Guardians helping out (then betraying) an alien race known as the Sovereign, led by Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki). After that betrayal, Ayesha oversaw the creation of a perfect being named Adam designed to destroy the Guardians. Ever since that scene, fans wanted to know who would portray the character.

Adam Warlock was created for the comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, though the character has evolved over the years. Warlock was first an artificial being created by a group known as the Enclave, and Adam Warlock has been reborn into the Marvel universe numerous times as either a hero or a villain. Usually he is aligned with the cosmic aspects of the Marvel universe.

Sources told Deadline that Gunn and company began their lengthy search for the person would be playing Warlock at the end of August, and Poulter meeting along with several other actors for the coveted part. As it is common with any major Marvel property, execs and Gunn took their time with the role given how excited fans were when it was first teased. In the end, Poulter’s test was too good to pass up.

Poulter was also featured in The Revenant and Detroit, and appears in the acclaimed Amazon miniseries The Underground Railroad. He will be seen next in Hulu’s limited series Dopesick.
