Tangled Up In Blue: Timothée Chalamet Goes Acoustic (and Electric) in Dylan Origin Story ‘A Complete Unknown’
Timothée Chalamet’s like a rolling stone in A Complete Unknown.
Searchlight Pictures released a trailer Wednesday for their new Bob Dylan biopic. Chalamet portrays Dylan in his younger days in the film that comes from director James Mangold (Walk the Line). Mangold also produces the film, which he co-wrote with Jay Cocks.
The film recounts Dylan’s attempt to make it big in New York City in the early 60s, and builds up to his iconic performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, where he caused a major upheaval in the folk music world by strapping on an electric guitar.
Chalamet performs “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” in the trailer, which shows him walking by NYC landmarks like the Hotel Chelsea and Cafe Wha?. He also gets an enthusiastic introduction by Pete Seeger (played by Edward Norton), and we see his dueling love interests: Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez and Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo. The character of Russo seems to be the film’s version of Dylan’s then-girlfriend Suze Rotolo, who appears on the album cover of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.
“A few months back, my friend Woody Guthrie and I, we met a young man,” says Norton as Seeger. “He dropped in on us out of nowhere and he played us a song. In that moment, we got a feeling we were getting a glimpse of the future.”
The film also stars Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, P. J. Byrne as Harold Leventhal, Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie, Dan Fogler as Albert Grossman and Will Harrison as Bob Neuwirth, among others.
Chalamet did a lot of research as he prepared to play the folk legend. In January, he visited Dylan’s high school in Hibbing, Minnesota, and spent time with the school’s drama students. He also stayed in Dylan’s hometown for a while. Mangold confirmed last year that Chalamet would do his own singing in A Complete Unknown, so his research also led him to listen to 12 hours worth of unreleased tracks.
A Complete Unknown will hit theaters this December.
