Sure, our computers didn’t melt down when the clock struck midnight on January 1st, 2000 – but what if they did?

That’s the premise behind the new retro-speculative disaster comedy/teen romance Y2K, directed by Kyle Mooney. Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, and Julian Dennison star as a trio of high-schoolers who only want to party, and maybe get a kiss at midnight. But when their End of the Millennium party goes on the fritz they discover that all computers and electronics are infected with the Y2 bug (a possibility that we all prepared for back then, only to find that nothing changed once the clock struck midnight.)

But what if it did? In the trailer, set to Chumbawumba’s party-till-you-drop (and then get back up) anthem “Tubthumping”, the teens go from partying heartily to running for their lives as they are attacked by electronic toy vehicles, VCRs, computer games and a particularly nasty Tamagotchi.

Former Saturday Night Live player Mooney co-wrote the script with Evan Winter and directs the film, which is coming from A24. Winter, Matt Dines, Ali Goodwin and Jonah Hill serve as producers.

Mooney also acts in the film, as does Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, who plays a fictionalized version of himself. Mason Gooding, Alicia Silverstone, Lachlan Watson, The Kid Laroi, Tim Heidecker, Eduardo Franco, Miles Robbins, Fred Hechinger, and Daniel Zolghadri round out the cast.
