Sasha Calle is going from young and restless to the girl of steel.

The Boston native who has appeared on daytime drama The Young and the Restless and the web series Socially Awkward has been cast as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, in the upcoming DC Cinematic Universe movie, The Flash.

The Flash director Andy Muschietti, DC Films President Walter Hamada and the film’s producers were all blown away by Calle’s audition, and they praised her “toughness and vulnerability” as she brought this new Girl of Steel to life, according to Deadline.

“I saw more than four hundred auditions. The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role,” said Muschietti.

None of the actors auditioning knew what part they were reading for as it was not revealed until very late in the process. Calle did a chemistry read with Flash star Ezra Miller over Zoom.

Deadline reports that Calle’s discovery here is like what Warner and Zack Snyder did when they cast fresh face Gal Gadot (who was known from Fast & Furious 6) in the role of Wonder Woman, making her a global star. The Israeli actress made her debut as that DC superhero in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice before going on to star in Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984 and Justice League.

Calle plays Lola Rosales on The Young and the Restless. She was nominated last year in the Outstanding Young Performer in a Drama series category at the Daytime Emmys. She also starred in the YouTube miniseries Socially Awkward.

The 22-year-old Calle will now become the first Latina actress to portray the iconic character. She joins the ranks of other actors who have played Kara; Helen Slater, who played Supergirl in the 1984 movie, Laura Vandervoort, who played her on Smallville, and fan-favorite Melissa Benoist, who currently plays her on The CW series that wraps after this coming season.

Not many details have been released regarding The Flash, which has been in development for years now without much to show for it. The biggest news, of course, was adding the Michael Keaton version of Batman to the cast, making it clear that the film would likely be creating a DC Comics multiverse.

Calle will join a star-studded cast that includes Miller, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Billy Crudup as Henry Allen, and Ben Affleck as the other Bruce Wayne/Batman in the multiverse.

Calle will fly to The Flash set soon, as production is expected to begin shooting imminently. The Flash should (if there are no delays) dash into theaters on November 4, 2022.
