The Force Awakens: Rick Moranis Un-Retires from Show Biz to Reprise Dark Helmet Role in ‘Spaceballs 2’
May the Schwartz be with you.
Director Mel Brooks announced on Thursday that Spaceballs 2, the sequel to his 1987 Star Wars parody was a go. Even more surprising than that was the news that Rick Moranis, who played Dark Helmet, the knockoff Darth Vader, would retire from his show business retirement to reprise his role.

Moranis stepped away from the movie biz after doing voice work on 2003’s Brother Bear, so this is big news. Also returning are Brooks, who played Yogurt (think Yoda) and Bill Pullman as the swaggering Lone Star, who served as the film’s Han Solo stand-in.
Keke Palmer will play a new character in Spaceballs 2, though the name of her character has yet to be released. Josh Greenbaum will direct from a script by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. The sequel was announced in June of last year. Gad is also expected to star and will produce the film with Imagine Entertainment.
The original Spaceballs, released by MGM, also starred John Candy as Barf, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, Joan Rivers as Dot Matrix, (Chewbacca, Princess Leia and C3PO), and Brooks in a second role as President Skroob. In addition to the obvious Star Wars references, the film also lampooned other outer space epics like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Alien.
The plot revolved around the evil Dark Helmet and President Skroob, who attempt to steal the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia, only to be thwarted by Lone Starr, his sidekick Barf, and the Druish princess Vespa.
Candy, Rivers, and Dick Van Patten, who also starred, have passed away since Spaceball’s release. Release date and other plot details have yet to be announced.
