A24’s movie based on the tragic life of a family of wrestlers will enter the ring this December, competing with the musical version of The Color Purple and the Aquaman sequel.

The Iron Claw, starring Harris Dickinson, Zac Efron, Stanley Simons and Emmy nominee Jeremy Allen White, will premiere in theaters on December 22nd, the same date as The Color Purple and Aquaman and The Lost Kindgom, along with Universal/Illumination’s animated film Migration.

The Iron Claw tells the story of the Von Erich wrestling dynasty from Texas, active during the 70s, 80s, and 90s, looking mostly at the rise and fall of brothers Kevin, David, and Kerry Von Erich, who all used Von Erich as a stage name; their real surname was Adkisson. Coached by their father, former wrestler, Fritz Von Erich, the family became plagued by death and tragedy as five of the six Von Erich sons died premature deaths.

Efron stars as the only surviving Von Erich son, Kevin, Jeremy Allen White co-stars as Kerry Von Erich, and Harris Dickinson plays David Von Erich. All three brothers were a force inside the ring, rivals with famous wrestlers like Ric Flair, and the Fabulous Freebird wrestling team.

White, recently nominated for an Emmy for his work on The Bear, said he had to gain 40 pounds for the role. Efron earlier released a first look still from the movie, showing his beefed up wrestling body.

Director Sean Durkin explores the belief shared by some of their fans that there was a “Von Erich curse,” and looks at the tumultuous relationship between the famous brothers. Five out of the six Von Erich siblings died premature deaths, thus the myth that the family had a curse placed upon them.

The film also portrays the tragic stories of the family’s younger brothers and fellow wrestlers, Mike and Chris Von Erich as Fritz, in the hopes of creating a long-lasting dynasty that helped move the wrestling world forward, put immense pressure on his sons. The fatigue from fighting and fame ultimately resulted in the suicide of three sons and the death of one from illness and one from drugs.

Also starring are Stanley Simons as Mike Von Erich, Holt McCallany as Fritz, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Lily James, Maura Tierney, and Aaron Dean Eisenberg as Ric Flair. SAG-AFTRA has granted approval to A24 that allows them to work on 39 independent productions during the strike, as they are not a part of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and are abiding by the terms of the latest offer submitted by SAG-AFTRA during contract negotiations. Despite having a Christmas release, though, The Iron Claw is currently in post-production and isn’t expected to make the rounds at film festivals.

Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) wrote the screenplay for the film. The Iron Claw is produced by Tessa Ross (Room), Derrin Schlesinger (Babylon), Juliette Howell (The Wonder), and Angus Lamont (The Girl with All the Gifts).
