He is Neo, Jack Traven, Johnny Mnemonic, Johnny Utah, John Wick, and of course, Ted. Keanu Reeves is no stranger to iconic – and heroic – roles.

So it’s not much of a stretch to picture Reeves suiting up for an upcoming Marvel adventure, and the actor is totally on board with that happening.

“It would be an honor [to join the MCU],” Reeves told Esquire in a new interview. “There’s some really amazing directors, and visionaries, and they’re doing something no one’s ever really done. It’s special in that sense in terms of the scale, the ambition, the production. So it’d be cool to be a part of that.”

The feeling at Marvel seems to be more than mutual. Back in 2019, as Reeves was basking in the praise for John Wick 3: Parabellum, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told comicbook.com that Reeves was being considered “for almost every film we make.”

“I don’t know when, if, or ever he’ll join the MCU, but we very much want to figure out the right way to do it,” Feige said. Feige reportedly likened their approach with Reeves to how they secured Jake Gyllenhaal, who was asked to be in several Marvel films before agreeing to play Mysterio in the second Tom Holland Spider-Man film.

Reeves is already at home in the DC Cinematic Universe, having played the hell-raising Constantine in 2005, and Reeves says he is open to donning the trench coat again. In the interview, the actor shared his hope that he might play him again. “I love playing Constantine,” Reeves said. “John Constantine…I’ve played a lot of Johns. How many Johns have I played? I don’t even know. I think it’s over ten. But anyway, I’d love to have the chance to play Constantine again.”

Unfortunately that probably won’t happen. British novelist Guy Bolton is signed to write HBO Max’s new iteration of a John Constantine movie, with J.J. Abrams set to produce the project. This time it looks like the producers are looking for a younger actor to take over as the demon-hunting, chain-smoking character, which seems to disqualify Reeves.

Reeves is keeping his DC credentials active though, by lending his voice to the upcoming DC League of Super Pets, where he will be playing a character as yet unnamed. And of course, you can see him as Neo again when Matrix: Resurrections hits theaters and streaming on December 22nd.
