The Killer Goo From Outer Space Returns: ‘Hellraiser’ Director Behind Another Remake of ‘The Blob’
An amorphous yet sentient blob of alien goo is coming once again to menace our world.
Warner Bros. has hired David Bruckner, the director behind the 2022 remake of Hellraiser, to helm a retelling of The Blob. Bruckner’s other credits include The Night House, The Signal, and two segments from the 2012 film V/H/S.
Steve McQueen got his first leading role in the classic 1958 film, directed by Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr., about a mysterious jelly-like substance that landed on Earth, near a town in Pennsylvania. First spotted by alien teenagers who tried in vain to warn the town leaders, the Blob goes on a murderous rampage, growing larger and larger.
The movie spawned a 1972 sequel, Beware! the Blob, which was directed by Larry Hagman, and in 1988, Chuck Russell directed a remake, also called The Blob, that starred Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith.
No plot details have been released yet, though it is known that David Goyer and Keith Levine are on board as producers. Judith Harris, who owns the rights to the story, will executive produce. Harris is the widow of Jack Harris, who produced both the 1958 and 1988 versions of The Blob.
The Blob is considered a classic sci-fi monster movie, and the film has inspired an annual festival in the film’s honor. Every year, fans come to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, where much of the movie was filmed. The highlight of Blobfest is held at the restored Colonial Theater, where fans reenact the scene from the film where theater-goers at the Colonial flee from the Blob.
