There Goes The Neighborhood: Real-Life Pink ‘Barbie’ Dream House Spotted In (Where Else?) Malibu
Barbie the fashion doll, soon to be Barbie, the motion picture star, may have broken the fourth wall to enter the real world.
John Schreiber, a cameraman for KCAL News in Los Angeles, recorded the unmissable sight of a hot pink Barbie Dreamhouse from his helicopter. The footage he posted to Twitter shows a three-story mansion that has an open-air dance floor and a pink slide extending from the second story down into pool that spans the length of the estate. Inside the pool are giant floating letters that spell out “K-E-N.” The home also sports the Barbie logo.
This isn’t the first time this very home has served as an earthly location for a doll-lover’s fantasy: the estate was upgraded temporarily for an Airbnb/Barbie mashup to commemorate the Barbie brand’s 60th anniversary. The home was made available for a limited time through Airbnb for the unreal price of just $60 a night, so even thouge we don’t know why this house is dressed in Barbie drag again, it’s possible that history is repeating itself, with a significant price bump, no doubt.
The Malibu home wasn’t used as a set for the Barbie movie, as the pink palace popped up over the weekend. It bears a striking resemblance to the movie version of the Dreamhouse, though, which in turn looks much like the toy version of Barbie’s mansion, which you can still buy today. The movie set house and the set’s rosy-colored neighboring homes used so much pink paint that it caused an international shortage of the Rosco brand paint color used in its design, according to production designer Sarah Greenwood who spoke with Architectural Digest.
The Barbie movie’s director, Greta Gerwig, told the magazine that the Dreamhouse set was designed without walls or doors which was a decision both true to the spirit of a dollhouse, which is completely open on one side to allow kids to play with the dolls and a way to make shooting a film within much more convenient.
The Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, hits theaters July 21st.
