If you follow the clues, they point to Eddie Murphy as the next Inspector Clouseau.

Following in the famous footprints of Peter Sellers and Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy appears to be zeroing in on the role of the comically inept inspector in a planned reboot of the Pink Panther films, coming from Amazon/MGM.

According to sources contacted by The Hollywood Reporter, the new feature project would be a live-action/CG hybrid, with a buddy cop plot that would see the Inspector and the Panther working together for the first time on the big screen. Insiders also classified the project as still in the deep development stages.

The reboot of the classic property will be directed by Sonic the Hedgehog filmmaker Jeff Fowler. Chris Bremner (Bad Boys for Life, The Man From Toronto) is writing the script, while Rideback’s Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will serve as producers alongside Larry Mirisch and Julie Andrews, who was married to the late Blake Edwards. Edwards directed most of the original Pink Panther movies.

The Pink Panther franchise began with the 1963 comedy film starring Peter Sellers originating the role of Inspector Jacques Clouseau. Sellers would go on to reprise the role in 1964’s A Shot in the Dark, 1975’s The Return of the Pink Panther, 1976’s The Pink Panther Strikes Again and 1978’s Revenge of the Pink Panther. Archival footage featuring Sellers was used in 1982’s Trail of the Pink Panther, which went into production 18 months after the actor’s death.

Martin appeared as Clouseau in the most recent series reboot, starring in The Pink Panther (2006) and The Pink Panther 2 (2009). Shawn Levy and Harald Zwart directed those films, respectively. In addition to Sellers, the role has also been inhabited by Alan Arkin and Roger Moore in a couple of one-off films.

The Pink Panther IP includes books, video games and animated series based on the bumbling French police detective and the titular character, which started out as only an animated character in an opening sequence until he got his own movie, The Pink Phink, in 1964, followed by a Saturday morning cartoon series. The Pink Panther refers to the name of a valuable pink diamond at the center of a heist in the original film. The character is also closely associated with pink insulation foam commercials.

According to Deadline, a source close to Murphy described the project as a natural fit for the actor, who has long admired the comedic performances of Sellers.

Murphy, who got his start on Saturday Night Live and as a stand-up comedian, became one of the world’s top comedy stars, appearing in hits like Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America in the 1980s, The Nutty Professor and Doctor Dolittle films in the 1990s and as the voice of Donkey in the Shrek films in the 2000s. He most recently starred in Netflix’s You People and Amazon’s sequel Coming 2 America.
