Who knew Willy Wonka didn’t always like to torture children?

In the new trailer for Warner Bros. Christmas confection Wonka, Timothée Chalamet plays the chocolatier as a young man, and this version of Willy is far from the sarcastic, even vindictive, older version of the character played by Gene Wilder in the darker take on author Roald Dahl’s tale, 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

In Wonka, Willy is up against rival business owners, not hyperactive and entitled children. According tothe official tagline: “…this irresistibly vivid and inventive big screen spectacle will introduce audiences to a young Willy Wonka, chock-full of ideas and determined to change the world one delectable bite at a time—proving that the best things in life begin with a dream.” Wonka’s dreams of opening his own shop are thwarded by the Chocolate Cartel – the combined forces of candy tycoons Mr. Prodnose, Mr. Fickelgruber, and Mr. Slugworth.

Johnny Depp also took a turn playing the character in 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The origin story was devised as a companion piece to the original telling of the tale, and serves as an origin story for the enigmatic chocolate artiste. The movie will also be a musical, with song-and-dance numbers througout.

And in another origin story, the trailer shows Wonka’s first encounter with his mysterious helpers/henchmen, the Oompa-Loompas, when he examines a specimen played by a deadpan Hugh Grant.

The cast also includes Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, Jim Carter, Matt Lucas, Natasha Rothwell, Tom Davis, Mathew Baynton and Simon Farnaby.

Wonka opens in theaters December 15th.
