To ‘Toy Story’ and Beyond: The Biggest Movie Announcements from Disney’s Weekend D23 Showcase
Perhaps the strangest bit of news from this year’s D23 event showcasing upcoming Disney movies was the announcement that Conan O’Brien would be voicing a potty-training toy in Toy Story 5.
Yvette Nicole Brown hosted the lengthy presentation that offered updates on the corporate media giant’s major franchises like Star Wars (The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s BDX droids joined Brown on stage) and Marvel’s next Avengers blockbuster (it’s in production now and Paul Rudd paid a visit from on set) as well as news about a brand-new movie from Disney Animation, Hexed.
But the standout image was that of late-night host and acerbic comedian O’Brien next to the image of his TS5 character Smarty Pants, a gizmo that helps to toilet-train children.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19th, 2026. Members of the D23 audience were treated to the first 3 minutes of the film, which was teased as a “toy meets tech” story: Buzz, Woody and Jessie must confront a new reality when their kids become more obsessed with electronic toys than they are with dolls.
Another new character, Lilypad, represents another electronic player in the Toy Story world. The clip showed some rogue Buzz Lightyear toys trying to rescue themselves from the desert island they all washed up on.
The event also featured an exclusive clip which reportedly showed Pedro Pascal of The Mandalorian and Grogu doing a Darth Vader impression, as well as Grogu’s reactions. The new chapter in the Mandalorian saga is due out on May 22nd of next year.

According to IGN, there was more to the clip: “The footage kicks off with a group of Snowtroopers getting ready to defend themselves from a threat we soon learn is Din Djarin. He uses all kinds of tools to just take everyone down with ease, from his flamethrower to knives to a blaster and more. It was a very exciting scene that very much felt like that iconic scene from Rogue One.”
As for Marvel, a clip of directors Joe and Anthony Russo along with Ant-Man himself, Paul Rudd played for the fans. The trio are in London starting the production of The Avengers: Doomsday, which is not coming out until 2027. There were no updates on the movie’s plot, just Rudd goofing around and some scenes of the Russos hard at work, but at least Marvel was represented.
In addition to other franchise news, such as the title of the next Ice Age movie (it’s Ice Age: Boiling Point) and actor Patrick Warburton galloping onstage to announce he would be voicing the character of Mayor Winddancer in Zootopia 2, there were mentions of two original films.
The cast of the animated Hoppers, due out March 6th, 2026, came onstage to show clips from their movie about woodland creatures, and the House of Mouse announced a brand-new animated film called Hexed, premiering in November 2026.
Hexed is the story of an awkward teenage boy, his Type-A mom, and his newly-discovered magic powers. Josie Trinidad and Jason Hand are directing.

The last big announcement was that next year’s D23 event will take place August 14th-August 16th at the Anaheim Convention Center and at the Honda Center.
