What happens when a stuck-up cheerleader dies with unfinished business?

That’s Darby’s (Riele Downs) problem in the new Hulu feature Darby and the Dead, which gets its streaming debut on December 2nd. High schooler Darby Harper gained the ability to communicate with the recently deceased after suffering a near-death experience as a young girl. She started a a side hustle counseling spirits who haven’t moved on, but business gets personal when one of her school’s popular girls won’t go into the light after her untimely death.

Hulu’s official description reads like a combination of The Sixth Sense, Heathers and She’s All That. “Capri (Auli’i Cravalho), the Queen Bee of the school’s most exclusive clique, unexpectedly dies in a freak hair straightening accident, resulting in the obvious cancellation of her upcoming ‘Sweet 17.’ Capri, however, pleads with Darby from the other side to intervene and convince Capri’s friends to proceed with the party as planned. In order to appease the wrath of the undead diva, Darby must emerge from her self-imposed exile and reinvent herself — which, along the way, allows her to find new joy back in the land of the living.”

Darby narrates her adventures in fourth wall-breaking asides, and gets a major makeover, giving the movie some serious Clueless vibes as well.
