Trailer Theft: ‘The Curse’ Stars Parody ‘Anyone But You’ Trailer Intro, Sparking Mock Instagram War
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, though it may be the insincerest form of marketing, if not done with affection.
In a new promo for their Showtime dramedy The Curse, Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone parody one done just 24 hours earlier for Sony’s new rom-com Anyone But You.
Fielder and Stone (hurriedly, we assume) crafted a promo introt that is almost an exact parallel to Sweeney and Powell’s introduction to the Anyone But You Trailer. Both couples are shown standing against a pale blue background, with Fielder wearing a white polo (as did Powell) and Stone wearing a peach-colored tank top that’s a few shades lighter than Sweeney’s.
“Check out the trailer for my new show,” a Stone effuses, to which Fielder counters, “My new show.”
“It’s actually my show,” Stone retorts.
Fielder scoffs, saying, “We’ll see whose show it is once people see it.”
Stone lets out an incredulous laugh and counters: “Check out the trailer for our new show, The Curse.”
“Better?” she asks Fielder, who states, deadpan, “Just play the trailer.”
“Oh my god,” Stone says before rolling her eyes. “Enjoy.”
The performance is a near word-for-word parody of Powell and Sweeney’s trailer, as you can from both Instagram posts below.
This sparked a mock Instagram war, with both Fielder and Anyone But You director Will Gluck playing along. Fielder, feigning outrage, posted a note on his Insta saying “I’ve just been informed that the introductory clip leading into our trailer for The Curse which I posted to social media earlier today has similarities to the trailer introduction for the romcom movie ‘Anyone But You.’ I want to be very clear – we shot this promo over six months ago, and I am seriously concerned that the marketing team at Sony Pictures somehow saw our promotional and copied it.”
For anyone who missed the jest, The Curse, a dramedy about a couple of television house-flippers who encounter what seems to be a curse on their production, premiered last week, on November 10th. Anyone But You, a romantic comedy where two people pretend to be in a relationship (and apparently based on the Shakespeare work Much Ado About Nothing), is due in theaters on December 22nd.
