Undead Love: Kathryn Newton Finds Love Six Feet Under In 80s Period Comedy ‘Lisa Frankenstein’
They say you never forget your first love. Especially if you just brought him back from the dead.
That’s the premise of Focus Features’ new horror/comedy/romance Lisa Frankenstein, due in theaters this Valentine’s Day. Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse play the couple trying to make a dead/undead relationship work in this comedy from first time director Zelda Williams, written by Diablo Cody.
According to the films’ official description, it’s “a coming of RAGE love story from acclaimed writer Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.”
The trailer shows Lisa (Newton), in her 80s finery, describing her crush on a deceased boy to her friend Taffy (Liza Soberano), who thinks its weird that Lisa spends so much time mooning over a headstone in a cemetery. But after a freak turn of events brings her dead crush to life, and the two of them team up to get revenge on the “bad people out there,” like her shrewish stepmom (Carla Gugino.)
The movie, if you hadn’t guessed by the title, is set in the 1980s, so of course there is the requisite trying-on-clothes montage set to new wave music, a tip of the hat, literally, to Molly Ringwald’s signature looks. and of course, the neon rainbow color palette associated with Lisa Frank, the designer of many a unicorn-bedecked Trapper Keeper.
The film also stars Jenna Davis, Trina LaFargue, Joe Chrest, Bryce Romero, Joshua Montes, Paola Andino and Henry Eikenberry. Zelda Williams, daughter of Robin Williams, has directed music videos and short films, but this is her first feature-length project as a director.
Scare up a date for Lisa Frankenstein when it hits theaters on February 9th.
