Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu on Saturday hit back at Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s comment in which he admitted to using the upcoming Marvel Studios film as “an interesting experiment” to help the mega-corporation figure out how best to make its movies profitable as the pandemic rages on.

In an Instagram post, the film’s star wrote:

“We are not an “interesting experiment”. We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year. We are the surprise,” Liu wrote on Instagram. “I’m fired the f**k up to make history on September 3rd; JOIN US.”

Liu also posted his comment on Twitter.

Chapek made the comment during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Thursday, confirming that his studio is committed to releasing the Marvel Studios film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with 45 days of theatrical exclusivity, despite the surge in COVID-19 infections threatening the global box office.

“On Shang-Chi, we think it’s going to be an interesting experiment,” Chapek said. “The prospect of taking a Marvel title to [Disney+] after just 45 days would be an interesting data point.”

Obviously, this didn’t sit well with Liu. Disney has been battling bad publicity from its movie release strategy for Black Widow, which premiered simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+. Star Scarlett Johansson is suing the company for violating the terms of her contract by doing that. Disney tried to throw shade on Johansson by issuing a statement that attempted to shame her for objecting to Disney’s plan, but that comment backfired on them as Johansson garnered a lot of support among her fans and peers.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is Marvel’s first Asian superhero movie and the first Phase IV movie to feature a character new to the MCU. It centers on Shang-Chi (Liu), the master of unarmed weaponry based Kung Fu, watching as he is forced to confront his past after being drawn into the Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung and more.
