Form of…a hit movie!

Warner Bros. announced today that Adam Sztykiel, who worked on the upcoming Black Adam, has been tasked to write and direct an original live-action feature for HBO Max based on the DC characters the Wonder Twins.

Zan and Jayna, aka The Wonder Twins, along with their monkey-like pet Gleek, were the shape-shifting alien compatriots of the Justice League on the animated All-New Superfriends Hour, a Saturday morning cartoon staple back in the late 1970s. Michael Bell voice Zan and Gleek, while Louise Williams provided Jayna’s voice.

The duo helped Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the featured Super-Heroes fight villains like Professor Zarkov and Dr. Pisces, using their signature catchphrase “Wonder Twin powers, activate!” Then, by touching their rings together, the two changed their basic forms to something more… helpful.

Jayna transformed into an animal, while Zan turned into some form of water, like snow, or ice cubes, or steam. Yes, it’s as silly and useless as it sounds; an eagle transporting a bucket of ice water to battle the Man-Beasts of XRA or a rampaging mummy is basically bringing an icicle to a gun fight, no matter what fearsome creature accompanies it.

The monkey-like creature Gleek was forced into the story for comic relief, as if any more was needed.

After the end of the All-New Superfriends Hour, the duo stayed alive, appearing in the Super Friends comic and, over time, the twosome became incorporated into the larger DC universe. The twins got an upgrade, leaving behind their comical origins to appear on episodes of Teen Titans Go!Smallville and The Flash.

Sztykiel has long worked with Warner Bros., writing for projects like Due Date, Project X, Spy Guys, We’re the Millers and the Dwayne Johnson monster movie Rampage. He was a writer and producer on Scoob! for Warner Bros. and is teaming up with The Rock again for the blockbuster-to-be Black Adam, which is getting a theatrical release on July 29th. He also created the NBC sitcom Undateable.

No plot details have been released nor has any casting information, so fans will have to wait to find out if the monkey stays in the picture.

The monkey is integral to the plot.
